Subject: Silvertone Amp

I had mentioned earlier that I was having Bruce Egnater of Egnater Amplification tune up a Silvertone Twin Twelve (made by Dynelectro) head I've had since I was in high school but
never really used, but since the harp amp faq said that it was a good harp amp I figured it was cheaper than finding an original Bassman .

It didn't need much work, a couple of jacks needed replacing and someone had rewired (improperly) the reverb unit. While he was at it, Bruce replaced the aged power tubes with a couple of Sovtek 5881's from his used tube bin (a lot of his guitarist customers like to retube a couple of times a year).

I had built (actually overbuilt) a cabinet with a single 10" Celestion for use with this amp (my daughter also uses it to practice her guitar). With the Silvertone in good shape, I have to say that I'm very pleased with the sound. If I want a clean sound I can get it because w/ 50W, you have to crank it a little to overdrive it, but when I do turn it up, I can get just the right amount of 'honk' (I can't come up with a better word) without sounding too distorted. I'm no maven about reverb quality, but the reverb now sounds pretty neat, too, although it is a bit feedback sensitive.

BTW, I asked Bruce (whose amps are considered by Guitar Player to be among the best guitar amps around) if he could make one that sounds like an old Bassman, and he said, "Sure, but why
not just buy a Bassman or a Kendrick?".
