This is a funny question... I have a background in classical music - and you should see the flair with which many solo pianists, cellists, etc. perform. There tends to be less gyrating when part of a "section": if a whole group of cellists started flailing about, they might collide with drastic consequences! But there are still very subtle things that are done.

Traditionally, people have seen popular and "rock" type performers as flamboyant, perhaps even to the extent of posturing. Occasionally there is an artist who makes a point of not gyrating: Brian May of Queen was one example.

There is a fine line here: anything that is a spontaneous expression of the music is certainly OK. A little bit of studied "acting" is OK too, to let the crowd know that this is the part that they should be excited about. BUT it can go too far - I've seen a number of acts where every time someone would solo they would throw their head back, roll their eyes up, and open their mouth as if they were in some kind of physical ecstasy. (Guitarists are the worst about this - you can't see a harp
players face when he solos anyway) This sort of think is OK once in a while - but don't let it get out of control. I saw one harp player who flailed around so much that people started calling it "harmonica as the supreme aerobic exercise"..Moderation, timing, emphasis.... all of these need to be considered. The physical aspects of "the show" should add to it, not detract.

I'm not sure I could even play harp while doing some of the gyrations I've seen! But anything that is natural and "just you being you" would certainly seem appropriate to any pop/rock/blues performance.....

(We see some of this in sports too - I've always found the posturing at the end of a major tennis tournament sort of ridiculous (player wins, falls to knees, raises eyes to heaven, clasps hands to head, etc.) - more so than any amount of "over celebrating" in many of our American team
sports like football or basketball. Talk about "physical aids to concentration" - I wonder... if his Airness, Michael Jordan, played harp - would he tongue block?)
