Dear me, we do have our knickers in a twist here.
Doug, a valuable (and voluble) savant with a clever tongue, can't restrain his wit and makes an off-topic post that garners a few replies. One or two commentators remind us that harp content seems to be missing. Whole thing could have blown over right here.
But no. Carolyn Mayr shows up in an uncharacteristic bad mood (at first I thought her tongue was in her cheek, until I saw the followups) and, in my opinion over-reacts (the magazine problem was FAR FAR worse, both in being hugely long and wasteful, and in being malicious in intent). Doug is one of the most valuable contributors to Harp-l. To suggest bouncing him for one small peccadillo is simply foolish. A friendly warning about content should suffice.
John Santana then compunds this little brouhaha by being rude to Carolyn ("with all due respect" of course), who then threatens to withdraw (I for one, hope it is an empty threat).
Jeez, has everybody been eating cranky beans?
Doug got a little carried away and I imagine he's suitably contrite (maybe not). Compared to the trivial banter that chokes most newsgroups I lurk in, this is almost nothing (and at least it was amusing). As long as the practice doesn't grow, I think very little harm has been done. Unless we all start taking needless potshots at one another.
