Subject: watered down blues

>> Blues hasn't suffered from mass appeal huh? What about beer ads, "The Blues
>> Brothers" (the movie and the endless spin-offs), "Crossroads", the
>> "Roseanne" intro, Eric Clapton's "blues-lite" ncicely packaged for
>> yuppies...do I need to go on?

The problem with this viewpoint is that all of the artists involved are
passionately involved with music and do it out of a love for the blues. The
Blues Brothers came out of Danny Ackroyd's love of authentic blues - he's a
knowledgeable student of the blues and if you get a chance to hear The House
of Blues show that knowledge comes out. The soundtrack to Crossroads was
done by Ry Cooder, a world class guitarist who has always been dedicated to
being true to whatever genre he works in. Roseanne is by Juke Logan, an
accomplished player and Clapton has always acknowledged his debt to Freddy
King and other masters. From The Cradle was a labor of love and I'm sure
that most of this list's members acknowledge the credentials of his harp
player Jerry Portnoy. When Clapton was on SNL after Cradle was released, his
playing on Five Long Years was just searing. The tunes on the album are all
authentic (probably generating a fair amount of royalties if the original
artists still owned the rights) and can hardly be called "lite". I don't
want to start a flame war, but I suspect that there's an element of "melanin
deprived folks can't play the blues" involved here.
