Subject: 'acoustic amplified' playing

I have aquestion about 'acoustic' playing into a mic which is placed in
a standard. I call it 'acoustic amplified' playing, because it's very
different from playing into a handheld (bullit) mic. I want to create an
acoustic sound, but it has to be amplified to be heard above the other
instruments, so I play standing before a shure SM58.

The question is: what is the right technique. I noticed it makes a very
big difference holding the harp almost against the mic or three inch,
even less, away from the mic. When I cup the harp for handaffects, the
volume that comes out of the amp, lowers dramaticly. Can somebody point
out how this kind of playing has to be done.
