Hi All,
It looks like time fro a quick reminder to all of our wonderful readers on what we can do to help our list ;-). In general, these are issues that are important specifically because of the large amount of traffic we are receiving - all of which is terrific. So, here are a few subjects to remember.
BOUNCING MESSAGES: We have a large number of folks who use some sort of web interface such as the harp-l homepages or e-groups to monitor our traffic and many of these folks are unaware that they are not actually "subscribed" to harp-l and cannot post directly to the list UNLESS the subscribe to harp-l-friends ;-). If you notice your messages aren’t getting through to the list but you are receiving all the mail you need go ahead and send a message to saying subscribe harp-l-friends from the address from which you intend to post. You will receive no extra mail, but you will be able to post.
HTML: We need to avoid using HTML because it always comes out as garbled text in the digests. One of us at "workers" will probably remind you if you forget with a little note. If you don’t know how to disable HTML or think you might be using it by default or mistake go ahead and ask us at or me at We will b happy to help out.
ATTACHMENTS: These are particularly "nasty little beasts" for majordomo and savvy internet users both. Attachments can carry viruses and other executable programs that many can’t use. We recently saw the "Happy99.exe" virus resurface on list. Sometimes majordomo rejects them all together - especially if they contain graphics. If you have a file or graphic you think the list might enjoy try to find somewhere on a web page to host this for our viewing. If you don’t have available space yourself go ahead and ask on list if someone does or ask us at the addresses above.
FORWARDING: This often ends up as an attachment. I found several messages I forwarded ended up as attachments even though I thought they were going out as regular text. When you are forwarding a message try to copy the whole message into a "new mail" to This will simplify a great deal for digest users and folks who avoid attachments both as well as avoid confusion.
UNSUBSCRIBING: Usually this information doesn’t actually reach the people who need it ;-). However, just a reminder subscription messages need to be sent to and you MUST disable HTML or Richtext functions to get an answer. The message to send is unsubscribe harp-l OR harp-l-digest. You must send it from the address you are subscribed under.
