Well, I must admit that I have never heard the thing you describe. I have
sometimes had valves that vibrate, producing a pitch an octave below that
of the reed, but as you were doing this stuff before I was born, I guess
you are familiar with this particular phenomenon and are describing
something different.

I have noticed sympathetic vibration with plucked reeds and it it not
limited to octaves. The effect is quite noticeable when plucking a reed on
a loose reedplate (the effect is even more noticeable on a kalimba/mbira,
where there is a soundbox to amplify the vibrations), but I find that it is
much less noticeable when the reedplates are actually mounted on the
harmonica. And I have to say that I have never noticed any sympathetic
vibration whilst playing the thing. I have no doubt that it does happen to
some extent, but I can't hear it happening to any significant extent. If it
did, I think it would probably mess me up when I am tuning higher limit JI
intervals. I guess it would be easy enough to test, but also I guess that
any tests would be subject to similar criticism as the SPAH and BHF
materials tests...

Get your own nail varnish!!

(BTW, I'll have some more to add on the topic of ringing reeds before too
long...)
