Neither Mr. or Ms. xyz could have invented the harmonica because they
haven't been born yet.

This sounds right because it fits with the common perception of evolution.
But it isn't. Evolution is not a continuous process, it starts and stops.
At the simplest level nothing happens until the organism reproduces, which
is a discontinuous process.

Also evolution does not go from simpler to more complex. That certainly
has happened but species also evolve from more complex to simpler.
Whatever give a species a reproductive advantage is what will manifest in
successive generations. Natures rule is quite simple, "Whatever works".

Same process happens in the economics. If someone invents a simpler widget
and people buy more of it than the prevailing complex type then that
product has evolved into a simpler state.
