Subject: Bassman - why go to 12?

I was just wondering recently, why do the controls on the 59 Bassman
reissue go to 12? The obvious answer is the amp is based on the
original '59 design, which also went to 12. Why did Fender design it
that way? after all, this is decades before Spinal Tap's innovation of
an amp that goes to 1. :-)
