Subject: why do you play diatonic

I've been away for several days... and this was a very nice
thread to come home to... Sure do dig Harp-l!

I started out with diatonics, many moons ago, because I was
amazed at the cool sounds being produced by good blues
players and I wanted to make those sounds. (I was listening
to a lot of Sonny Boy I, J. Geils Band, Taj Mahal and John
Mayal at the time.)

I was also amazed at how many years it took me to be able
to reproduce some of those sounds... Deep bends, growls,
two-hole bends, blow bends, etc. and fell absolutely in
LOVE with diatonics when at last I was able to create my
own cool sounds and make them work for me. Not just ripping
Sonny Boy licks, but makin' my own improvisations, my own
sound.

The most gratifying thing for me is when a glimmering of
the soulful and gut-wrenching stuff that moved me in the
beginning comes out of MY harp today. "Hey look, Ma, I'm
really harpin'!!"

Took up chro a few years ago because I wanted to get sounds
I couldn't get from my diatonic... especially 30's and 40's
type licks... yeah, I'm mostly honkin' the blues on my
chro... but am branching out slowly into jazz as I learn
more and get better. Loving the chro now almost as much as
my short harps. :)

I guess, when it's all said and done...
it's a love thang...

Harpin' in Colorado,
- --Ken M.
