As you may have noticed from a post I made a week or so ago, I'm working on compiling a sort of 'selected discography' of stuff that Walter Horton has played on. If you haven't seen it (recently), have a look:
http://www2.prestel.co.uk/r-w-rinn/horton.htm
As there are a fair few entries in now, I thought I'd see if I can 'clean up' a few of them with the help of y'all.
Please note regarding sound quality: I'm usually putting 'excellent' if it's a really pristine, excellently recorded thing. Something like Horton & Bell I'd say 'pretty good' or something, because it's not like REALLY sharp, but it's not muffled or glitched or anything. Stuff like Shines & Horton is just 'okay'....
Here goes...
1. Mouth Harp Maestro CD (Memphis '51 recordings)
Does anyone have this?! I want to know what the sound quality is like.
2. Joe Hill Louis: The Be Bop Boy with Walter Horton and Mose Vinson (early 50's Memphis)
I'd like to know if Walter plays on any of the tracks credited to Louis or Vinson:
Joe Hill Louis: She Treats Me Mean And Evil . Dorothy Mae . Sweetest Gal In Town . Keep Your Arms Around Me . Got Me A New Woman . I'm A Poor Boy
Mose Vinson: 44 Blues . My Love Has Gone . Mistreatin' Boogie . My Love Has Gone . Worry You Off My Mind . Reap What You Sow
Also, is 'Walter's Instrumental' the one he recorded in 1951, or is all this stuff from '53/4?
Also also, anyone have this disc, to give a rating on the sound quality?! It's on the German label Bear Family.
3. v/a Blow It 'till You Like It (Memphis early 50's again)
Is 'grandmother got grandfather told' a re-titling of another track?! Looking for a sound quality rating for the disc, and also to know if Walter played on any of the cuts by other artists:
Houston Boines: Cryin' in the Courthouse [3:00] Coy "Hot Shot" Love: Wolf Call Boogie [2:35] . Harmonica Jam [2:30] . Wolf Call Bookie [3:00] . Harpin' On It [2:28] Joe Hill Louis: Keep Your Arms Around Me Mama [3:06] . Got Me a New Woman [2:58] . Sweetest Gal in Town [2:58] . I'm a Poor Boy [2:58] Woodrow Adams: Train Time [2:46] Willie Nix: Midnight Showers of Rain [2:59] . Prison Bound Blues [2:40] . Baker Shop Boogie [2:48] Doctor Ross: Country Clown [2:56] . Polly Put the Kettle On [2:56] . Jukebox Boogie [2:42] . Feel So Sad [2:26] . Boogie Disease [2:34]
I know a couple of them are harp players anyway, but I thought I'd ask just the same.
4. Modern Chicago Blues (Testament mid 60's)
same sort of thing again:
Johnny Young: My Baby Walked Out in 1954 . You Make Me Feel So Good . Money Takin' Woman . Back to Chicago . Bad Blood . Tired of You Smiling . Let Me Ride Your Mule Wilbert Jenkins: Married Woman Blues . Crawling King Snake Maxwell Street Jimmy: Crying Won't Make Me Stay . I've Got My Eyes On You . Hanging Around My Door . Long Haired Doney Robert Nighthawk: Blues Before Sunrise John Lee Granderson: Bumble Bee . I Don't Feel Good . That's All Right John Wrencher: I'm Going to Detroit William Mack: Hideaway
Sound quality?!
5. Big Mama Thornton - Ball n' Chain
Anyone know which tracks feature Walter, and what the sound quality is like?!
6. Johnny Shines - Masters of Modern Blues and Last Night's Dream
Anyone know which......same as above.
8. v/a - Low Blows
Avenue Stomp - when/where's that recording from?!?
7. Muddy Waters - I'm Ready
Now, Walter AND Portnoy play on this one. I've listened through, and believe that Walter is playing on 33 Years, Mamie and Screamin' and Cryin'. I THINK both players are on I'm Ready and Hoochie Coochie, but the following I'm not sure of:
Who Do You Trust . Copper Brown . Rock Me . Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
Are those Portnoy?!
8. Muddy Waters - earlier 50's etc. Chess recordings
Anyone who can help me with this would be.....a great help. I have several things which are credited to 'either Little or Big Walter'. I'm sure there are several Muddy tracks I don't have etc. Gonna need help.
Anyway, that oughta do for now. I hope you agree that the site is coming on well, and should be a helpful resource. You can't really rely on the All-Music guide entry entirely, as there are certain mixups, certain albums with no track listing or comments etc. I'm trying to be more thorough and detailed.
I'm already noticing that the page is getting quite 'long', and thinking about maybe breaking it up somehow.... Perhaps into decades, or ??!?? Any ideas?!
