Attend BHF Thursday. Everything seems to be running pretty good. Sure wish I could stay for the entire weekend.
Short reports:
David Fairweather - 1st harp-Ler I met that day. He was accompanying an older, dual harp racked, guitar playing gentleman. Of course David was playing an alternate tuned harp at the time. I think David is ready for a harp playing weekend.
Harp Depot - John & Loretta (?) were busy setting up store. John had most everything in that store. He also had around 10 sample harps he would let anyone try. All those new Suzuki Gizmos & others. He also had a Danelectro BLT slap echo and told me to give it a try. Didn't have much time to play with it, but I thought it sounded mighty fine. Is anyone using delay along with reverb, or is it redudant? Slipped into the store latter in the day to find Lorreta staring out the window at a shiney new 1100cc Yamaha. She said she picked it up on the way to BHF the day before. Cool Chick! Hope she enjoys her ride back to Indiana. Oh yea, picked up a Suzuki OverDrive, will report later.
Mike Stevens seminar - Mike is a harp phenom. He can play faster than anyone I've ever heard. Mostly a pucker player to maintain the speed. He described how he plays with his throat and body. He actually changes the size of his inner body trunk to get the optimum resonance for different notes. Said he has had 6 hernia operations & throat trouble because of his playing style. I'm not going to cop his style. I'm not going to cop any of his licks either. Mike puts months of practice to work out his tunes. He may be the only person to ever be able to play his tunes. Mike is working on a new CD. It will be a killer, unless you don't try to cop any of his licks.
Joe Fillisko seminar - Essentially a question & answer, right from the start. Was hoping to gain some insight to improve my Dude Harps. Not much luck. Joe was forced to keep thing simple. He had to define reed gaps and try to explain the technique to obtain an overblow. Joe did point out a path for me to pursue. It's up to me to see where it leads. It's clear Joe is not about to freely devulge his hard earned knowledge.Otherwise a real interesting 2 hour seminar. Lots of harp playing, hand demos, trains, & Bobbie Giordana trying to pursuade Joe to save post-war blues.
