Subject: Re: blues in london

in central London, your best bet is the "Aint Nothing But Blues" bar on
Kingly Street in Soho off Regent St. Blues 7 nites a week, the only place
that does this now that the Station tavern seems to have lost its music
license.

havent really caught too many harp-led bands there - except for the
Blackjacks from Brighton and Little George Suref (sp?) is a fine player
and distinctive singer- tho' definitely check out ian Siegal (guitarist
and very soulful singer, plenty of attitude) or James Hunter (50's r'nb,
as in Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, raw rock'nroll, again a guitarist and
soulful Sam Cooke-influenced singer).

if you're looking for jam nites, the best is at the World's End pub in
Finsbury park, most evbody there is pro or semi-pro. and harpist Tim in
the house band is a good player. that's on wednesdays. other than that
there's a jam at the Tufnell Park tavern on Thursdays - tho' with both of
these jams I havent been there for many months - check out Timeout
magazine or Blueprint to see what's happening.
also on Thursdays is a kindof jam nite with Station House - a supremely
funky soul blues afrobeat outfit (with a little dub and reggae thrown in
the mix as well), but the jammers are more like guests of the group.
definitely try to check out these guys act - probably the best rhythm
section in town and a jaw-dropping slice-and-dice guitarist. and then
there's the Bobby-Bland-by-way-of-Toots-Hibbet-styled vocalist and monster
percussionist.

other worthwhile acts are Lee Sankey (terrific harp player, very funky
hip-hop/G Love-styled groove), Paul Lamb & the Kingsnakes if they're in
town. Eugene Hideaway Bridges is a very highly rated guitarist and singer
(again big Sam Cooke influence). Dino Baptiste is a fine
singer/keyboardist - Ray Charles/blues Bros type stuff.

email me personally if you're after more info.

have fun
cheers,
James Daniell
