Subject: Re: Buckeye Harmonica Festival

The Buckeye Festival was fantastic this year. I finally caught up on my
lost
sleep this afternoon. I wish to share some of my most memorable Buckeye
2000
experiences with the list.

Richard Sleigh! Richard Sleigh! Richard Sleigh!
Richard performed for an informal gathering for 2 of the late nights. He
played acoustic guitar, rack harmonica, and sang. I was blown away. His
time was in the pocket and grooved. He often played unison guitar/harmonica
licks, and with beautiful phrasing. He dripped with soul and style. Even
his mistakes became musical. I look forward to any upcoming recordings and
performances?

I also was moved by Dennis Gruenling's Lester Young like feel and phrasing.
Dennis played licks which made everyone laugh, followed with intense octave
lines, and threw in some melodic phrases. I love his use of space. I'm
looking forward to hearing his upcoming recordings.

It was great to hear Jim Lohman on the chromatic. I also enjoyed his
Sinatra
like singing. He improvises over jazz standards with such melodic lines.
He
is able to voice lead and outline the changes all by ear! Someday...Thanks
Jim, for the lesson on chromatic.

Doug Tate's Roumanian Rhapsody by Enesco was astounding! You must hear him.
Perhaps he'll perform it at the Summit?

Sandy Weltman performed a great set. I especially enjoyed "It Don't Mean a
Thing." Sandy and pianist, Carolbeth True, listened and responded to each
other musically.

George Brooks played the *%#! out of the diatonic. He has grabbed hold of
the overblow/draw techniques and plays chromatically with fluidity.

I was fortunate to sit in on a tongue blocking lesson Joe Filisko gave my
friend, Phil Hague. I wasn't able to play any of it, but it was great to
hear. I also enjoyed seeing Jackie Merritt and Ed Kaitz, some harmonica
friends I've connected with locally. Both played beautifully during the
jams.

Ben Nathanson played with some hip phrasing at the blues jam. David
Fairweather sounded great at the jazz jam. I also enjoyed his smooth vocal
interpretations of some jazz standards. Bobby also sang a standard or two.
Thanks Jon Ross for the chromatic repair tips. Beth, I hope your trip home
was OK. I was happy to discover I look exactly like a young Buzz Krantz. I
guess I have a lot to look forward to...

Thanks to Jack Ely and all those I met.
