Subject: Re: Solid State Amps (heresy)

When I started playing amplified harp back in about 1961 I used a "Selmar
Little
Giant" A 4 watt tube amp with an 8" speaker. A lot like a Fender Champ. It
wasn't
loud enough for playing with a blues band, so I bought a Viking Laskey 50
Watt
transistor amp. I thought this was fantastic.

I then traded up to a Vox AC50 tube amp with two 2x12" cabs. This was a
fantastic
harmonica amp. I only had it for a couple of years though, then a thief
stoll
it. I was bereft!!!

So I replaced my valve AC50, with a brand new Vox Supreme "200 Watt" (Only
100
Watt really!) transistor amp, with again two 2 x12" cabs. This was an
excellent
harmonica amp. Nice and loud!!!! Built in "Fuzz Box" :-)
At the time, I didn't honestly notice much difference in my on stage sound,
having gone from a tube to a transistor amp.

I giged with this tranny amp for about 30 years until it just wore itself
out....
I then got myself a second-hand 1970's silverface Fender Bassman 100 Watt
top,
which I used with two 2 x 12" cabs.

Not a bad harp amp, but it needed to be very loud to get a decent tone.

Just now I use a Fender Blues De Luxe 40 Watt 1x12" combo.
It's got enough volume for most venues, doesn't feed back too much and fits
in
the back of my car!

For recording, I often use a tranny Pignose. Great tone! It hasn't got much
volume though.

Valve? Solid State?
Who cares!

It's the harmonica player that makes the music. The amp just makes it
louder.
