Subject: Harp amps - thoughts..

I have seen several different threads regarding tube amps lately. Here are
some thoughts I have gained from owning and playing tube amps.

1. Old amps from the 50s, 60s, and 70s almost always need to have some work
done in order to get the best sound. Tubes need replacing and capacitors
need replacing most commonly.

2. Old speakers may look fine and sound horrible. Typically the voice coil
will drom from the glue breaking down. Therefore, a re-cone job is needed.
I will note that most of the time speakers seem to be OK.

3. Bias settings makes a world of difference. This is not smoke and
mirrors.

4. Always expect to pay an additional $100-$200 to get any tube amp in
tip-top shape. This covers things such as tube replacement and cap jobs
etc.
Sometimes this is less sometimes more (i.e. new speakers). It all depends.

5. Not all tube amps will sound how you would like with harp. For example,
I have 2 SF Champs. One sounds great, the other is really lame (however it
sounds great with guitar - go figure).

Anyhow, those are my findings on buying tube amps. Always factor the extra
"repair" costs into an amp budget. Once you gain familiarity with amps you
can tell what needs to be fixed when you try out an amp. Personally, I like
to try and find amps that do not work. The price is usually lower and the
amp can be fixed fairly easily in most cases.
Good luck hunting.
