Hi Celtic enthusiasts,

Here are some highlights of Brendan Power's seminar at the Summit:

1. Irish music is characterized by melody playing instead of improvisation,
and follows an AABB song structure ~90% of the time.
2. Rhythms include jigs (6/8), reels (2/4), slip jugs (9/8), horn pipes
(4/4) and slow airs
3. Keys tend to be those allowing use of fiddle open strings, thus, G, D,
A, and sometimes E for songs that are in the Ionian (standard major key)
mode.
4. Other important modes are Dorian (often Am and Em), Aeolian (natural
minor, often Bm and Em) and less frequently, Mixolydian (D and A).
5. Brendan uses a quick, sideways 'jaw-flick', a quick 'duh duh duh'
articulation, and the slide button for the fast triplet ornamentations
characteristic of Irish music.
6. He also uses (and sells!) lots of specially tuned harmonicas. Paddy
Richter tuning has 3B of a standard diatonic raised one whole tone. The
'slide diatonic' is a CX12 chromatic but with all reeds of the higher-tuned
reedbank raised a semitone, thus allowing the (often) more appropriate
whole-tone ornamentations. Some of his modified chromatics are completely
unvalved.
