Hello All,
If you want to begin using overblows in your blues playing then take a moment to think about the notes you are already playing. The same riff can be played in any octave with the use of overblows.
Any place you normally use a 4 draw bend (Db on a C harp) you can play the same thing an octave higher using the 7 overdraw. It the sam patteren of thought if you use the 3 haf-step bend that relates directly to the six overblow.
Overblows are nothing special. They are no different than the other bends. If you think they are something different then mentally they will be harder to play. I have noticed that all of my begining students have no problem with the overblows. Most of them were able to get them within two weeks of me showing the how. If you think they are harder to get than other notes than the will be. The goal is not to think about them at all.
I'm sure there are lots of traditional blues players who incorporate overblows into their playing.
Joe Filisko and Dennis Gruenling come to mind first. Michael Peloquin has a great new album where he uses overblows seemlessly.
I will be at SPAH for a couple of days next week. I will make myself available to anyone who wants to know anything about overblows in any context, vibrato, whatever.... Feel free to interrupt me and I will be more than happy to sit down with anybody. My only purpose of going to SPAH is share what I know. Please do not hesitate to ask.
