I wish I could drive down to a local store and try out a
"whole lot of amps", but unfortunately no store like this exists
in my town of 85,000 people. We have 3 music stores
all of which naturally cater to guitar players and have a very, very limited
selection of amps. I lucked out on one amp (my Blues Jr.)
that was sitting in a corner of a franchise store with a sale sign
on it. Other than that the other 3 amps I own I have either traded
for or bought on Ebay. I have done a lot of amp research through the
archives/web sites and have also relied on advice from fellow listers.
And I am quite happy with all of my amps, they all have unique
qualities and uses. My advice: if you live in a podunk town
like I do, do your research, ask for advice (you will get it) and
trust the archives, if you see that an amp has a LOT of good reviews
you can probably bet that it makes a good harp amp. It's always
a crap shoot when you buy something via mail-order or auctions etc.,
but if you are prepared with a lot of research and info, the odds are
more in your favor, and by all means if you are fortunate enough to have
access to a store with a lot of amps, grab your mic and go for it....
It would be a gas. My 2 cents.
