Subject: Amplified gospel (or, the story of my new 545S)

Don't know if the Shure 545S pistol grip mic is the "holy grail" of harp
mics or not, but the one I just got sure does sound sweet!
Looking around for one that’s in good shape? I have a suggestion. Check out
your local churches.
On Saturday I was helping a buddy do some work at his church. We were in the
rec room where they have music equipment and there sat a pristine vintage
545S on a mic stand. At first I thought maybe their priest blows harp and is
a huge Butterfield fan. ;-) But on second thought I remembered reading that
these were once really common mics for churches and schools and such. I was
raving about the mic to my friend, but I certainly wasn’t going to say
anything to the church folks. Well, lucky for me, my buddy has a big mouth.
The music director walked in and right away my friend sez, "Hey, this guy
here wants to swap for that mic!" To make a long story short, the church
musical director was pleased as hell, err, heck to get a modern SM-58 and
cord for that old 545S and its 4-prong cord. So, folks, if you’re hunting
around for an affordable 545 series mic, do as Curtis told Jake and Elwood,
"You get wise, you get to church!"

PS: Or call Tom Ellis, naturally.
