There can be few on any harmonica list who are not aware of Brendan...
whether it is his wonderful playing of Celtic music, his deep knowledge of
the workings of the harmonica, his experimentations with different tunings
and layouts or the production of his superbly altered harmonicas. SO,
let's leave him and look at Dean Magraw!

Dean and Brendan met for the first time at the Global Harmonica Summit in
Minneapolis, June 2000. The collaboration was so positive and energising
for both musicians that they were determined to continue it - despite the
fact Brendan lives in London, and Dean in St Paul Minnesota. Dean is an
elegant, exciting, and extraordinarily innovative guitarist whose
influences reach from the British Isles to India, and who weds folk and
jazz in a style all his own. His performances are full of surprises, with
playing that ranges from quiet intensity to explosive power. As one
reviewer stated, "With approximately 6 billion people on this planet trying
to make a living playing the guitar, it can be tough to stand out - but
Dean Magraw does".

While the tyranny of distance might be against a trans-Atlantic musical
partnership like this, the sheer joy of music making and their professional
approach will ensure that Dean and Brendan make it happen - for themselves
and also for their audience.

HARPIN' a MILE HIGH ... SPAH ... Denver, Colorado, 15-19 August 2001

Besides world class diatonic and chromatic solos, at the convention you
will have the opportunity to see and hear some once-in-a-lifetime
performances of some of professional harmonicists playing together. For
those attendees who want to get up and play, there will be plenty of
opportunities with afternoon play-alongs and open mic sessions and the late
night blues jams. In addition you can sign up in advance to be
one of our scheduled performers at the Wednesday and Thursday evening shows.

Besides the entertainment we will have wonderful educational seminars by
some of the best harmonica teachers in the world and many of our
entertainers. As always Simpson/Smith will be there doing their renowned
six hour workshop.

Again this year some evenings we will have the SPAH Jazz Club going on in a
separate room with a jazz trio accompanying those who wish to play some of
the old jazz standards.

At SPAH 2001 there will be a nice compliment of exhibitors and merchandise
for you to choose from. John Hall of Harp Depot is expected this year, of
course, with a full line of harmonica merchandise... and his End of
Festival Auction! In addition you will see exhibits by some entrepreneurs
who have specific harmonica products for sale.

This year the spouse activities will include activities such as breakfast,
crafts and surprises together with great optional tours. Members will be
available to direct families to activities such as outlet malls, casinos,
quaint shopping villages, the Air Force Academy Chapel and Pikes Peak at
Colorado Springs, and Central City, the home of the famous painting, "The
Face on the Bar Room Floor".

By the way, if you are wondering whether there will be enough for you to do
at SPAH 2001, here are some ideas for things to do there: Listen to
fabulous scheduled entertainment for 17 hours, shop in the SPAH store for
17 hours, play in the Jazz club for 9 hours, buy a SPAH 2001 and/or Mile
High Harmonica Club T-shirt, attend harmonica seminars for 25 hours, go to
spouse activities for 10 hours, listen and play at the blues jams for 8
hours, win prizes at 4 raffles, learn from Simpson/Smith for 6 hours, visit
the Harp Depot store for 50 hours, go to the open mic for 11 hours, look at
antique harmonica displays or just visit and play with friends for 109
hours if you don't happen to like sleeping.

We hope to see you at SPAH 2001.
We know you'll have a great time!
