Subject: RE: Bending Hole five to E flat on a C harp

Actually, it is theoretically possible to get a 5Dbb (whole tone
bend) Eb on a C diatonic, IF you valve 5B.

The limiting factor for bending is the opposing note. By valving the
opposing note, we eliminate this limitation, and can now bend a reed
as a single reed.

But speaking of generic diatonic harps, the Mel Bay book is wrong.
On a stock diatonic, using traditional bending, you can bend the F
about a quarter tone. While it's not represented by standard
notation, it's a very useful "blues" note. Little Walter uses it in
Juke, on the lick:

2D (3Db 3D) 4D 5B 5D(1/2B)>5D>>>>>5Db (4D(1/2b) 4D) 4D(1/2b)
(3D(1/2b)3D) 2D 2Dbb

Without this "non-note", this lick would be about as lifeless as a
doormat.
