Hey List,
Jason mentions listening to the late Eddie Harris, among others, as a good
way to develop interesting solos over minimal or no chord changes. Eddie is
my favorite soloist on any instrument for the reason that he can develop
ideas & melodies that create interest in even very simple one or two chord
structures. He is the master at improvising a melody & then playing
variations off it; he uses octaves to play call & response with himself; he
uses space; he really builds intensity; he has a huge bag of tricks. Good
stuff for any harp (or sax, or guitar, etc.) player to listen to. Check out
the CD Dancing By A Rainbow for great examples of his funky playing. BTW, he
can also play great bop & standards.
