Subject: Charlie Musselwhite

I was fortunate to see Mr. Charlie Musselwhite perform at Famous Dave's
Barbeque in Uptown Minneapolis Saturday night. I can only say that it was
the best blues performance on a harmonica that I have seen live since I saw
Junior Wells with Buddy Guy back in the early eighties. This guy has chops
to spare! He has an incredible tone and never seems to play a note that
isn't needed. His solos are tasteful and cover all ten holes. I don't think
he overbends but he sure can play chromatically where its possible with
bends alone. Speaking of chromatic, he plays the big harp quite a bit also.
On most tunes he would set his diatonic down and use the chromo for comping
the other soloists. And what a band! Crack pros with impressive chops.

The place was raucous and loud and I think that even he was a bit surprised
at the warm and enthusiastic crowd. I know he has to be in his sixties yet
as soon as the first set ended there he was signing autographs in front of
the stage...for the whole break! I brought a Hering Blues cover for him to
sign and asked him if he still played Hering harmonicas and he said, "no the
quality got to be inconsistent", and I told him that "yeah, that's why I
only have the cover left". He laughed at that.

The second set was just as hot as the first. One slow blues had everyone
screaming in ecstasy by the end. I believe he was using a D harp throughout
but at one point picked up a low D and started jamming on the low
end....then went back to the high end of the regular D. It was really
effective.

Charlie finished the show up with my wife's favorite harmonica instrumental
of all time; Christo Redemptor. It was very moving but there was no key
change in it, still the harp was unbelievable: smooth, full, perfectly in
pitch on the 3' bends and the lower bends to; a great 3rd position
performance.

...and once the applause had finally died down from the adoring crowd, most
of whom were standing, Charlie Musselwhite stepped down from the stage and
stood in front, once again, and talked to people and signed autographs. This
guy is the real deal and a classy guy as well. I really can't say enough
good things about this show.
