By all means I am not being an ass

But that's real funny... I like crystal elements in a few set-ups, but
overall I agree that there not the best (w/ most set-ups today).. walter and
butterfield isn't around anymore (who knows what they would be using if they
were). It's not like they had a huge variety or the finances in some cases,
to get the "ultimate rig". Is any harp players actually imitating Walter,
Wilson, Butterfield or any of the greats today?

PS
I personally think that's silly, several good players used crystal, ceramic,
dynamic.. whatever. I've heard a good tone come from them all. But I
certainly honor your opinion...

I have no events to report for today.

It's been a very good year. The holidays have been good to us and so far
very little hostility has erupted across the world. The harmonica world has
seen the loss of few of it's members and a lot of new additions in
recordings. The new edition of the Encyclopedia is finally out and the
eharmonica website is progressing rapidly, (less than 300 biographies left
to launch).

I hope that 2003 is a great year for all of us. We should all prosper and
grow during the upcoming year.

Thanks for everything,

I know that. I'm saying that IF you start on a natural don't count the
flats(sharps). If you start on a flat/sharp, don't count the naturals. smo

good
an enough to play as well as he did and I hope to God I. Never feel the pain

he was able to express in song's like Sad Hours. Part of what made Men like
Walter was the lifestyle they lived and in a lot of cases is was what killed

them as well and the debate over his decline shows both a lack of
understanding as well as a lack of respect for the Man and the body of work
he left behind like us all he had Demons and from them came his music

Hi,
To say Little Walter didn't use crystals is clearly incorrect, as he has
been pictured using Shure Slim-X's, which is clearlyn a crystal mic, and I
have pictures of him during the 50's at the Apollo Theater in NYC using an
Astatic JT30, and tho ceramics were available back then, the crystal was
CLEARLY the most popular mic back then until the Shure 55S came along
(supposedly the wprld's 1st dynamic mic, the one people seem to refer to
today as the Elvis mic).

Good players can get a good sound thru damned near anything no matter pretty
or ugly they are.

matters too much what the mic looks like either . . .

Subject: tube question

Hey folks,
My guitar player mentioned something about changing my tubes every coupla
years. I've had my amp for maybe 5 years, with the same tubes. To my ears
it still sounds good, but maybe if I change the tubes it'd sound better?
Does it depend on what tubes they are (who manfuactured them)? I don't know

who made the tubes, the amp is a Sonny Jr. 2 and it's the stock set-up if
that helps. Don't know if the pre-amps wear out faster than the power tubes

or what. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Subject: Pro Junior tube swap

Happy Holidays to one and all!
I just got a new non-tweed Pro Junior (1X10  /  15 watts) and want to
boost the harp volume I can get before feedback. In the archives,
knowledgeable folks sometimes recommend switching the 12AX7's for
12AU7's. I have never swapped out tubes before. Is it as easy as: 1)
unplug amp 2) remove 12AX7's 3) replace with 12AU7's 4) plug in
amp and blow ??
I also plan to play guitar through this amp. I see so many other
guitarists/harmonicists on the list these days. I wonder if my guitar
sound will lose commensurate treble tones (I play in a Robert Junior
style -- very few ripping post-Hendrix single string high leads -- more
of a pre-60's Memphis Sonny Boy ensemble sound, if that makes sense).
Any suggestions/ directions or tube brand recommendations would be much
appreciated -- even a reputable online dealer's URL.
Thanks very much for any help here, and have a great New Year everybody!
Dan Todd

I really don't think you're going to get the volume you want from your amp
by
switching tubes. You may get a very little, but my opinion is that you're
going
to get better results with speaker experimentation.I'm not an expert in the
field so I can't suggest a speaker to try,but I'm sure you'll get a few
suggestions from others who are.The tube switching will change the tone of
the amp more than the volume.I have a similar problem with my Blues Jr. I
like the tone but I'd like to get more volume and I'm starting to look into
speakers. Most guys are steering me toward the Weber's.Good luck.....Dave

Daniel,
Power tubes wear out faster. Pre-amp tubes don't have to be changed
unless they go
noisy, short out, arc, or just sound plain lousy. If you like the sound of
the amp, I'd
leave the pre-amp tubes alone. Pre-amp tubes can last quite awhile,
especially if
they're the older US or Western European manufactured NOS tubes.
Power tubes are another story. If they do short out, they can sometimes
take other
components with them (such as the screen resistors). Usually you'll have
some warning
such as visible arcing inside the tube, weak power, and weak frequency
response. Age
has little do with wear, it's use. Tubes will last forever if not used so
you can't
judge by 5 years. If you used the amp regularly, (say gigging every
weekend, and
rehearsing once or twice a week) for 5 years, you're probably due for a
power tube
change. If the amp hasn't seen much use in 5 years, then don't sweat it.
Also, the
type of tubes and type of amp has a lot to do with it. Again US or WE NOS
tubes will
tend to outlast the newer Russian and Chinese made tubes, 6L6 GC tubes will
outlast 6L6
WGB or GB or 5881 tubes, especially in amps with higher plate voltages. For
instance,
my silverface Super Reverb, which has high plate voltages, went through a
set of NOS 6L6
WGB's in about 6 months, but I've had a pair of JJ 6L6 GC's in there now for
over a
year, still going strong. The JJ's are rated to withstand much higher plate
voltages.
If you have a local amp tech with a good tube tester, pull the tubes and
have them
tested.

Hope this helps some,
Don D.

Daniel,

Power tubes wear out faster.  Pre-amp tubes
don't have to be changed unless they go noisy, short out, arc, or just
sound plain lousy.  If you like the sound of the amp, I'd leave the
pre-amp tubes alone.  Pre-amp tubes can last quite awhile, especially
if they're the older US or Western European manufactured NOS tubes.

Power tubes are another story.  If they do
short out, they can sometimes take other components with them (such as
the screen resistors).  Usually you'll have some warning such as
visible
arcing inside the tube, weak power, and weak frequency response.
Age has little do with wear, it's use.  Tubes will last forever if
not used so you can't judge by 5 years.  If you used the amp regularly,
(say gigging every weekend, and rehearsing once or twice a week) for 5
years, you're probably due for a power tube change.  If the amp hasn't
seen much use in 5 years, then don't sweat it.  Also, the type of

Hi Dan,
The only preamp tube I'd consider replacing is the 1st 12AX7 (still sounds
great with harp with this tube, as well as guitar), but I would substitute
it with an NOS 12AY7/6072, preferably an NOS GE black plate. Some gain will
be cut, mostly from the top end, but for harp you'll be able to turn it up
more. The original setup has more top end to it tho, and many guitarists
will prefer this, but if you're playing guitar with this, like harp, you'd
turn the tone control ALL the way down, and then completely rolling off the
treble on the guitar.

Changing preamp tubes are pretty easy, but just remember to make sure the
amp is OFF when you change the tubes, and once you've changed them, get a
lint free paper towel to wipe off any finger prints so it prevents hotspots
on the tube which can eventually damage them. If you can afford it, go with
NOS USA or Western European tubes because 99% of the time they will not only
sound better, but last considerably longer than most of the stuff made today
in China and Russia (with the exception of those made by Svetlana, which IS
a well made tube).

Hope this helps. Contact me off line if have any questions.

Sincerely,

Hi,
Gotta agree with Don on this one BIG TIME. Of the newer production tubes
being made today, the JJ's, Svetlana's, and some EI's are the only ones
worth a damn. Most all of the newer stuff from China and Russia (with
Svetlana's the SOLE exception) I absolutely REFUSE to use.

When we say no matter how pretty or ugly, are we speaking about the
microphone(s) OR the players?. If it's players, I got the ugly part covered.

Your guitar player friend is correct. BUT, lets think about that for a
moment.
IF you were to toss out the 4 ft florescent tubes you have in your work
light over your work bench, and replace them with new tubes...guess what,
the light will be brighter AND cleaner.

The time transpiring between you making this switch will be such that you
MAY not notice the difference,

If you were to step out of a 5 year old car and into a new one, you MAY
notice the difference, regardless of time lag. This is, of course, a HUGE
oversimplification, but makes the point that "ALMOST any newer equipment
will be cleaner/fresher than ALMOST any older equipment"..This doesn't say
it will be better, just cleaner/fresher (potentially)............smokey-joe
